Equivalent Paces Calculator

Instructions

Select the type of cardio and enter the distance and time you're interested in finding equivalent paces for.

What is an equivalent pace and how is it useful?

An equivalent pace is a pace at a different distance that is equivalent in terms of accomplishment. As long as the distances use the same primary energy system and are reasonably close, this provides a good estimate of the pace you could keep for that distance. For example, if you enter info for a half marathon, the pace given for a marathon will be a good estimate since both distances primarily use the aerobic system and are both long distances. However, a 100m sprint relies primarily on the ATP-CP and anaerobic glycolisis systems. In this case, the given pace is useful in comparing the level of accomplishment, but not necessarily as an estimated pace.

How does this calculator work?

The calculator is largely based on Peter Riegel's formula with some adjustments made to better match each type of cardio. In addition, support for sprint distances has been added by using world records as the basis for equivalent performances at each of the distances. For more information of Riegel's formula, check out this article on Wikipedia.
